Learning AI is a decision, not a talent. Here is your 6 month path.
This guide is for people who want to build systems
The internet is full of “learn AI” advice, but most of it turns you into a mere tool user. This plan has a different goal: in 6 months, get you to the level where you are not just using artificial intelligence but building AI systems, meaning automations, agents and products that people are willing to pay for.
Think of it this way: AI tools are like musical instruments. In a month you can learn a few chords, but to conduct an orchestra you need to understand how the instruments connect with each other. That is exactly what these 6 months are about, from chords to orchestra.
The plan is built with the logic of a career switcher. Every month has a clear theme, tools, skills, free resources and one mandatory project. Without the project, the month does not count as finished.
4 principles without which the plan will not work
1 hour a day, every day
Studying 7 hours once a week does not work. The brain builds skill through repetition, not volume.
Apply what you learn the same day
Test every new piece of knowledge on a real problem the same day: from your work, your life or a friend's business.
Build in public
Show every monthly project: on LinkedIn, Instagram or to your friends. It is both accountability and your future portfolio.
Tools change, the skill does not
Do not cling to a specific tool. You are learning a way of thinking: break the problem down, give AI the right context, verify the result.
The plan, month by month
Foundations: understand what you are dealing with
Goal: make AI a daily habit and understand how it works under the hood.
- What a language model (LLM) is, how it “thinks” and why it sometimes gets things wrong (hallucinations)
- How ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini differ, and when to use which
- The basic structure of a prompt: role, task, context, format
- How to verify AI answers instead of trusting them blindly
- Week 1: complete the first half of the Elements of AI course, and spend 20 minutes a day talking to any chatbot
- Week 2: take Anthropic's AI Fluency course on how to work with AI effectively
- Week 3: go through the first modules of Microsoft's Generative AI for Beginners series
- Week 4: pick 3 recurring problems from your work and solve each of them with the help of AI
- Elements of AI: the legendary free course from the University of Helsinki for beginners
- Anthropic Academy: free courses and certificates on AI Fluency, prompting and working with Claude
- Microsoft Generative AI for Beginners: a free program of 21 lessons
- 3Blue1Brown: the clearest visual explanation of neural networks
Prompt engineering and AI content
Goal: go from a casual user to someone who gets professional quality results out of AI.
- Advanced prompting: few shot examples, step by step reasoning, role instructions
- Context engineering: how to give AI the right information at the right moment. The value is in the context, not in clever wording
- Custom Instructions, Projects and GPTs: creating your own specialized assistants
- Visual AI: generating images, video and voice
- Week 1: take Anthropic's prompting course and the prompt guides from OpenAI Academy
- Week 2: create your first 3 specialized assistants (for example a text editor, a translator, an analyst)
- Week 3: image generation, 5 images a day in different styles, until you feel how the prompt changes the result
- Week 4: build your prompt library: 20 tested prompts that deliver real results
- Anthropic Academy: an interactive prompt engineering course
- OpenAI Academy: free lessons on getting the most out of ChatGPT
- DeepLearning.AI Short Courses: free 1 hour courses from prompting to agents
Automation: AI starts working without you
Goal: learn to connect tools to each other so tasks get done on their own. This is where building systems begins.
- What workflow automation is: trigger, step, result
- The logic of APIs in plain language: how programs talk to each other
- Building scenarios in n8n or Make: from a form to a spreadsheet, from an email to Telegram
- Adding an AI step to an automation: text analysis, classification, generating replies
- Week 1: take the beginner level of the free n8n course and build your first simple scenario
- Week 2: plug in AI: create a scenario that analyzes and classifies incoming messages
- Week 3: build a content pipeline: from idea to finished post with one click
- Week 4: find a real person (a friend, a small business) and automate one of their recurring processes
- n8n Courses: official free courses from beginner to advanced
- Microsoft Learn: free modules on AI automation and agents
- freeCodeCamp: free video courses on APIs and automation
AI agents: systems that make decisions
Goal: move from automation to agents, meaning systems that do not just execute steps but choose which step to take.
- How an agent differs from an automation: goals, tools, independent decisions
- How an agent uses tools (tool use / function calling)
- RAG: how to give an agent your own knowledge (documents, databases)
- Agent reliability: boundaries, checks, human approval for important steps
- Week 1: go through the core part of the Hugging Face Agents course, agent theory with practice
- Week 2: build your first agent in n8n: a chatbot that can search, calculate and answer
- Week 3: add RAG so the agent answers based on your documents
- Week 4: test a real scenario: an agent that answers customer questions or qualifies leads
- Hugging Face Learn: free Agents and LLM courses with certificates
- Anthropic Academy: courses on building agents with Claude
- DeepLearning.AI: short free courses on agents and RAG
Product building: code is no longer a barrier
Goal: build and ship a real, working product with AI tools, no programming degree required.
- The mindset of coding with AI: describe clearly, build in small steps, verify every step
- The anatomy of a web product in plain language: interface, database, logic
- How to connect AI APIs to your product
- Shipping: making your tool available to real users
- Week 1: build 3 small tools in Lovable or Replit: a calculator, a generator, a form. The goal is to train your hands
- Week 2: pick one real problem and describe your product: who will use it, what it will do, what success looks like
- Week 3: build the core functionality with an AI step (for example one that analyzes text, builds a plan or generates replies)
- Week 4: ship it, give it to 10 people to test and fix the 3 most painful issues
- Anthropic Academy: courses on building with Claude Code
- freeCodeCamp: the basics of web development, if you want to understand the code more deeply
- Kaggle Learn: short free courses on Python and working with data
Systems and income: connect everything together
Goal: bring 5 months of skills together into one complete system and become someone the market values.
- Systems thinking: how to turn a business process into an AI system (input, processing, decision, output)
- How to measure and present the value of your work: hours saved, revenue added
- Portfolio and case studies: how to package your 6 months of projects
- How to find your first client or a job that requires AI skills
- Week 1: pick one real business and map its processes: where does AI deliver the biggest value
- Weeks 2 and 3: build a complete system: automation + agent + interface, one that solves a concrete problem for that business
- Week 4: prepare your portfolio: 6 projects, each with the problem, the solution and the result. Publish it and start talking to the market
- Microsoft Learn: advanced modules on AI agents and business applications
- Google Cloud Skills Boost: free learning paths on generative AI
- Hugging Face Learn: for going deeper once you are ready for a more technical level
