Google, Microsoft, Amazon and IBM give away thousands of dollars worth of training because it serves them: the more people who know their tools, the bigger their ecosystem. You just take advantage of that. But half the lists floating around the internet are wrong: there are courses everyone presents as a "free certificate" that are either behind a subscription or give you no certificate at all. I checked every one of these, the price, the time, and exactly what you walk away with.
Actually free and actually worth it
These nine are free, open to anyone, and end with something you can put on LinkedIn or your CV.
Google AI Essentials — the fastest start
What it teaches: AI fundamentals, the craft of prompting, speeding up everyday work with Gemini, and responsible use. Built for total beginners, no technical background required.
Time: around 5 hours, fully self paced.
Price: free on Google Skills. You finish with a certificate signed by Google.

Google Skills badges — one badge in 45 minutes
What it teaches: short, focused modules on generative AI, large language models and image generation. Each one issues its own digital skill badge.
Time: 15 to 45 minutes per module. You can collect three in one evening.
Price: free, no credits needed.

Career Essentials in Generative AI — Microsoft and LinkedIn
What it teaches: how generative models actually work, where they genuinely help at work, ethics and bias, and how AI is reshaping careers.
Time: 5 courses, roughly 4 to 5 hours.
Price: free, no LinkedIn Learning subscription required.

Microsoft Applied Skills — Microsoft's only genuinely free credential
What it teaches: this is not a theory quiz. You go into a real lab environment and complete a concrete task, for example building an agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio.
Time: the assessment runs about 2 hours, prep takes a few more.
Price: free, no exam fee, and you end with a verifiable credential.

AWS Educate — Introduction to Generative AI
What it teaches: what foundation models are, where generative AI is being applied in business, and which tools Amazon offers for it.
Time: a few hours.
Price: free. No AWS account, no credit card, just an email address. Anyone 13 and over can register.

What it teaches: Amazon's entire free library. The four highest value ones for AI are below.
Price: the digital courses are free. The paid subscription is $29 a month and unlocks the hands on labs. You do not need it to start.

Paid, but worth the money
These are proctored exams with real difficulty and real weight. If you have already been working with AI for a year and want to stand out, one of these costs under $100 and stays on your profile for years.
Google Cloud Generative AI Leader — $99
Who it's for: not engineers, but the people making the decisions. Managers, marketers, product managers, founders.
What it tests: generative AI fundamentals, Google Cloud's AI offerings, techniques for improving model output including prompting, grounding, RAG and fine tuning, plus business strategy.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner — $100
Who it's for: people who use AI but do not build it. Business analysts, marketers, product managers, sales, IT support.
What it tests: AI, ML and generative AI concepts, foundation models, prompt engineering, responsible AI, security and governance, and Amazon's services including Bedrock, SageMaker and Q.

GitHub Copilot Certification — $99
Who it's for: developers and anyone writing code with AI every day. This is the one serious credential that shows you don't just accept the code, you know how to steer it and check it.
What it tests: responsible use, Copilot features, data flow and architecture, prompt engineering and context crafting, privacy and content exclusions.

Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals
What it tests: AI concepts and capabilities including machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI. The larger second half is building real solutions in Microsoft Foundry.
Price: the training is free on Microsoft Learn. The exam is paid, roughly $99, and the price varies by country.

These two are excellent, but give you no certificate
Both of these appear on every "free AI certificates" list. Both are misrepresented. The courses really are good, just do not expect a credential.
1NVIDIA — Generative AI Explained
A free two hour course, no prerequisites, genuinely strong content. But an NVIDIA moderator has stated plainly on NVIDIA's own forums that this course does not offer a certificate. Hundreds of people have finished it and then opened a thread asking where their certificate is.
2GitHub Skills
Free, interactive, and the most hands on thing on this entire list. The lessons run inside your own repository: getting started with Copilot, integrating MCP, agentic workflows. But there is no badge and no certificate. What you keep is your public repository. And honestly, that is stronger than a certificate. Just list it on your CV as a project, not as a credential: github.com/skills
How to put this on your CV so it actually works
Ten certificates on a CV says "this person collects courses." Two says "this person made a choice." Pick one broad and one narrow.
- Broad: Google AI Essentials or Career Essentials in Generative AI
- Narrow: whichever sits closest to your role, GitHub Copilot for developers, Generative AI Leader for managers
Not a mention in your "About", but the "Licenses & Certifications" section with the date and the verification link. Credly badges connect automatically. The recruiter's filter reads that section, not your prose.
- Add it to your headline too if you are actively looking for AI work
- A certificate without a verification link is worth close to nothing, so always include it
"Google AI Essentials, 2026" is a line. "Google AI Essentials, 2026 — applied it to automate reporting, saving 4 hours a week" is a story. Companies hire the second one.
- Next to every certificate, write one sentence about what you did with it
- If you did nothing with it, the certificate is not ready for your CV yet
This is the part almost nobody does. Writing "Proficient in AI" means nothing today. Instead, build one simple agent that saves you time, and put the link on your CV.
- For example: an agent that pulls the important items out of your inbox every morning and writes one list
- For example: an agent that turns a client enquiry into a ready to send proposal
- Size is not the point. The point is that it works and you can show it
