An AI agent is not a program you have to write. It is a hire. You explain the job once, and it does that job every day without you.
Agentic AI starts here: you name the recurring work that takes your time, Claude Code walks you through the build. You do not need to be technical. Even if your mom is not technical, she can follow the steps.
This guide is a practical first start from real work and life tasks, not a developer install walkthrough. For the no-code Console path or the VS Code path to a first agent, use the links below. Here the method is: describe the work, Claude guides you step by step.
What an agent is, in one breath
An agent is a hire for one recurring job. Think: pull Excel numbers into one sheet each week, track client replies, or turn your existing posts into new draft ideas.
You are not learning system theory today. You pick one job and let Claude explain the clicks. For deeper setup paths, see the no-code Console path and the VS Code Claude Code path.
Open Claude on your computer
- Computer. Download the Claude desktop app (macOS, Windows, or Linux), install it, and sign in.
- Open the app. At the top center, click the Code tab. That is Claude Code on this path.
- Phone. Claude on mobile works for chat and remote use. The main path for building your first agent with Claude Code is the desktop app on a computer.
The method: name what takes your time
Code is open. You do not start with “build me an agent.” You start with the work that takes your time every week.
Write it all down: work meetings, reports, Excel sheets, sales numbers, client replies, orders, invoices, unread email, repeating admin. Whatever is true in your job or week.
Tell Claude: do not fix anything yet, and do not give general advice. Turn what you said into a short list of recurring jobs, and ask questions until the list is concrete. Then you pick one job and ask it to guide you step by step to your first agent for that job only.
Copy-paste prompts
Use three shared blocks first: (A) describe the work, (B) guide me for one job, (C) if you get stuck. Then pick a short work example and paste it after A.
A. Describe the work
I am going to describe the recurring work that takes my time in [job / business / content / admin / data]. Do not fix anything yet. Do not give general advice. Listen, turn what I said into a short list of recurring jobs, and ask clarifying questions until the list is concrete.
Here is the work:
[paste what repeats every week: meetings, reports, Excel sheets, sales numbers, client replies, orders, invoices, unread email, admin tasks, analytics you keep postponing, whatever is true for your work]B. Guide me for one job
Guide me step by step to build my first AI agent for this ONE job: [one job from the list].
Assume I am not technical. Use Claude Code in the desktop app. Explain each click and each decision in plain words. Stop and wait for my OK before any change that needs approval. Build only this one agent. No second agent until this one works once.C. If you get stuck
I got stuck here: [what screen you see / what error / what you do not understand]. Explain the next single step only. One action. Then wait for me.Five short examples. Paste after A
Job / team
Weekly meetings produce action items that disappear. Status updates live in [Slack / email / Notion]. I spend Monday rebuilding the same report for [manager / client]. Nobody has one clear list of what is due this week.Data / Excel / analytics
Sales and marketing numbers sit in separate Excel sheets. Every week I copy-paste into one file by hand. I need clean totals for [metric], a short summary of what changed, and one chart-ready table. I keep postponing the analysis.Small business / freelancer
Orders and requests come in on [WhatsApp / Instagram / email] and I lose track. Invoices sit half-written. Clients wait days for a reply after I send a quote. I never know which [order / project] is stuck.Content / marketing
Winning posts sit unused. I have performance numbers in [Instagram / YouTube / TikTok / Ads] but I still start drafts from zero. I need a weekly pipeline: what worked → next draft ideas → one calendar for [channel].Email / work admin
Unread work email is a pile. The same [forms / receipts / renewals / approvals] come back every month. I spend evenings sorting instead of deciding. Nothing has a clear next action or owner.Quick summary
